This is the third in a series of blog posts about each this weekend’s marathoners. Don’t know what the marathon is? Find out here!
Sarah Marie has been an acting singing improvising artistic adventurer for over fourteen years, with extensive experience in musical theatre and theatre management. She has been an improvisational actress since 2009 and is a proud member of the B. Iden Payne Award Winning Troupe: Girls Girls Girls Improvised Musicals. She has taught improv for three years at The Institution Theater. On stage she has been called “hilarious”, “fierce” and “truly exceptional” and was nominated for Outstanding Actor in a Leading Role by the Austin, Texas Critics’ Table Awards for her performance work in 2014. It is an honor to perform in The 46 Hour Marathon and to support children’s programming at The Hideout Theater. A big damn honor.

Why did you want to be involved in the marathon?
Because I’m 50% terrified and 50% ecstatic about the thought of doing it. That math is right where I want to live.
What excites you most about doing the marathon?
You can level the fuck up in your performance skills. Imagine breaking down all those mental bullshit barriers you put up when you’re “trying to improvise”. You let go. Even if if takes the monster of sleep deprivation to wrench your claw like hands away from the security of “trying”. You have no choice. You WILL let go.
What scares you most about doing the marathon?
Meeting myself beyond my ability to play polite. Complete loss of self control. The possibility of letting my teammates down with shitty improv and a shitty attitude. The pain.
Which format are you most excited about?
All of them. For reals. Think of all the amazing people I get to meet and work with in one weekend. Normally I’m pretty insulated. I’m managing and teaching at The Instituion so much and I don’t take the time to go out and the other rich work happening in our community. The marathon is an all you can eat buffet of improv! Every school! All the flavors! What a gift.
What’s the longest you’ve ever stayed awake?
34 hours
What’s your dumb comfort item you’ll be bringing with you?
My fuzzy pj dinosuit. I was told that when our bodies start to shut down we’re going to get really cold. That dino is the warmest, silliest, best thing. I just hope no one is too bothered by a giant dino doing scene work.
Also, my lucky sweater. Quick Story! A dear friend of mine met a girl on acid at Cochella… She took one took at him and said “You neeeeeeed this.” and put a dirty brown sweater over his shoulders. Every button is different. It makes me look hipster cool. I added pretty pockets. Whenever I put it on, I think that it’s saving my life somehow. You know the moment you’re about to go on a bad trip and then someone gives you bubbles to blow? That little change in perception? This sweater gives you that, and I’m pretty sure it’s going to save my life in the marathon.
(Did you ever notice how when a person says “quick story” it is most often not quick…)
What’s your pump up song?
TOO MANY. Anything by Chvrches right now. Crystal Castles “Vietnam”, Animal Collective “My Girls”, Taylor Swift is damn delightful… sigh. This is a big question.
Awesomeness!! You go Sarah!!
