Specialty Workshops

In addition to our standard 6-week level classes, The Hideout likes to host specialty workshops on specific topics that will add some great skills to your improv tool belt.

These can range from intensives with world-renowned instructors from out of town to one-off sessions with local teachers showing you some of their unique expertise. They’re a great way to work on very specialized skills in a short amount of time.

Here’s what we have coming up:

Sat. November 2nd

Sun. November 3rd

Sat. February 8th

John Gebretatose - Characters on Characters on Characters
John Gebretatose is in town this November and offering a workshop on Characters. This workshop will explore the challenge of one improviser playing multiple characters within one scene or show. We will look at ways to help you remember all those lovely characters in your brain while having fun. You will leave with a handle on what systems work best for you when remembering details and juggling all of your improv characters and their wants and needs, your improv plot points and more. We you’ll leave with tools to help you add more layers to your improv.
John Gebretatose - Hard Topics
John Gebretatose is in town this November and offering a workshop on Hard Topics. This workshop will highlight what happens to us as performers when a scene becomes scary, offensive, or insensitive, and we freeze or lose ourselves. We explore some approaches to get the agency back when we find ourselves somewhere uncomfortable, tools for improvising mindfully, and finding a proactive voice for you and your show. We will learn the SwagHat format. A living room-style discussion, and then we perform scenes inspired by the conversation.
John Gebretatose - Felt Tips
John Gebretatose is in Austin this November and offering a workshop on Felt Tips. This improv workshop focuses on emotions as a focal tool to help free your brain from stressing out over what to do or say.
John Gebretatose - A Very Special BIPOC Jam
John Gebretatose is in Austin this November and we’re supercharging the BIPOC jam into a workshop with John that is free to our BIPOC community.
Stephanie Rae - The Power of Specificity
Stephanie Rae is in town this November and offering a workshop on The Power of Specificity. This is a red ball. But is it a glittering, diamond-encrusted disco ball? Or is it a worn down, quarter-sized rubber ball? The details you add to your dialogue can make or break a scene or set, so we’re going to build your specificity muscles with mental exercises. Then, we’ll put these skills to the test with improv comedy based on true stories.
Stephanie Rae - Find Your Flow
Stephanie Rae is in town this November and offering a workshop on Find Your Flow: A Freestyle Rap Workshop for Everyone. Whether you’re brand new to the mic or an experienced MC, you’ve got something unique to bring to the stage and we wanna hear all about it! We’ll cover different methods for building a verse, practice rapping from a place of authenticity, rap in scenes, and create larger-than-life rap personas. If you’ve ever wanted to learn and practice freestyle rap in an encouraging environment, then push past your fear of failure and let’s find your flow!
David Raitt - Improv Illusions
Level up your physical improv skills! In this workshop you’ll learn some easy-to-practice techniques for object work, environment, and physicality. Topics we’ll explore include performing realistic-looking activities, discovering ideas from the environment, playing safely, and how to turn the stage into your playground.
