This Fall, The Hideout Theatre brings traditional American murder ballads new life in A Deed So Dark. These dusty, rural, sentimental, and gruesome tales of murder are created anew each night with live musical accompaniment and folk songs created out of thin air in the moment.
“I’ve always been attracted to darker things, and I love murder ballads,” remarks the show’s creator and director, Valerie Ward. “What’s great is that they’re not just dark, they’re very sweet and sentimental at the same time as being gruesomely detailed. Anyone who is a fan of Johnny Cash, Nick Cave, The Carter Family, or O Brother Where Art Thou will likely enjoy this show. It’s full of beautiful music and terrible acts, and those two make a lovely counterpoint.”
There will be banjo.
