Stephen Kearin Workshops

Stephen Kearin (of 3 For All, Impro Theatre, and the creator of the language spoken in the Sims video games) is in town this August and offering a weekend intensive (and Thursday one-off workshop). If you’ve seen 3 For All in one of their past visits to Austin, you know they do unparalleled storytelling improv with fully realized characters and thrilling stage effects.

Dynamic Staging
with Stephen Kearin

Narrative Improvisation is a true theatrical artform, but improvised blocking on stage can sometimes feel drifty, arbitrary and for lack of a better term…CASUAL!!! Through a simple placement of 9 X’s on the stage floor, explore what it means to improvise Theatrical Blocking with true purpose!

7-9:30pm on Thursday, August 22, (pay what you can $45/55/75)
**OPEN CLASS** This workshop is open to all experience levels. 


Aug 24-25 Weekend Intensive (10 hrs total)
STEPHEN HAS APPROVED A HANDFUL OF “AUDITOR” SPOTS FOR ANYONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO SIT IN THE BACK OF THE THEATER, OBSERVE AND TAKE NOTES. THIS IS A NON-PARTICIPATORY ROLE.

In Person Improv Intensive with Stephen Kearin

Explore a wide range of skills over the course of a weekend with your fellow improvisers. We will build our awareness of the Space/Sense Object dimension, deepen our shared understanding of Character Work, learn through Direct Feedback and Explore First Offers as we learn to Want What We Have! Come share in a lineage you are already a part of…THIS is The West Coast School!

10am-12:30pm and 2-4:30pm on Saturday & Sunday, August 24 & 25 (pay what you can $175/250/350)
**Six months improv experience required (or Hideout graduates of Level 3)


 

 

 

More BIO: Stephen Kearin began his career in 1987 with Bay Area Theatresports in San Francisco, where he was a company member for 14 years. He was a founding member of Improv Theater and True Fiction Magazine and was a member of San Francisco’s 3 FOR ALL for 27 years. Stephen is currently a member of the critically-acclaimed improv ensemble Impro Theatre in Los Angeles where he was nominated for an Ovation Award, Best Featured Actor in a Play, for his work in The Western UnScripted. Other stage productions include the stilt-walking Iago in San Francisco Opera’s Otello, Sally-Sue Weber in A Weber Family Christmas and he originated the role of Movie Mega-Superstar, Blaine Bustier in An Evening with Dirk & Blaine. Stephen is the co-creator of “Simlish” and was the principal male voice of The Sims, Sims 2 and Sims Medieval. He created the Martian languages for Disney’s Mars Needs Moms and Supergirl. He is featured in the DreamWorks Animation films Kung Fu Panda 1,2&3, Madagascar 2&3, Monsters Vs. Aliens, Megamind, The Penguins of Madagascar and Home. His voice is featured in the newly released Netflix Animation feature The Magician’s Elephant. Stephen portrays the role of Sergeant Geller on Amazon Prime’s hit show, WAYNE and appears in season 3 of The Mandalorian. He has performed his solo show TOUGHEN UP to sold-out houses in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Stephen has served as a visiting instructor and advisor with Disney, DreamWorks, Laika, Paramount & Netflix Animation, as well as Stanford University, USC, The US Olympic Ski Team and has trained the artists of Cirque Du Soleil.
